Last week D took Luna girl to daycare. He's been doing that a lot lately both because he's been home to do so, and I also have been going in to work a bit more often (hopefully this is just temporary). I usually pack Luna's lunch the night before and place all of her little plastic containers in one area of the fridge. They are usually labeled with her name and any special instructions on masking tape (e.g., cut up into finger food, mix with rice cereal, etc.). Sometimes I am lazy about removing the labels before placing them in the dishwasher. The result is sometimes our food gets stored in some of the same plastic containers with random labels. This was the case last week.
D knows that one of my common complaints (yes, I am allowed to complain) is that he is "lazy" and he doesn't look "hard enough" for things. He'll often open the bathroom closet looking for let's say, Advil, scan the cupboards for all of 10 seconds before exclaiming that "he can't find it", even though it's staring right at him (I am allowed to complain because he will attest to this). Given this complaint, D decided to be extra thorough last week and despite the fact that I had stored all of Luna's lunch in one section of the fridge, he decided to scan the fridge for all plastic containers that might belong in her lunch box for daycare. Well, lo and behold, he found an extra one....one that wasn't with the rest of them...and he decided to pack it along with her lasagna, sweet potatoes and couscous, and yogurt. God bless him for being thorough.
When I picked Luna up from daycare, Rejany asked me what food we'd sent that day because Luna "really liked the black stuff!" She apparently devoured it and kept saying, "Mmmm Mmmm." "Black stuff?", I respond not recalling any "black stuff" in her lunch. "Yes, black stuff. And it kinda smelled like chocolate." Doh!!! D had in fact found the decadent chocolate sauce that I made and stored in one of her containers labeled "mix with rice cereal" and Rejany had happily obliged and mixed the chocolate with rice cereal and fed it to Luna. The chocolate sauce only had bittersweet chocolate, about ten bazillion ounces of powdered sugar and cream. And I was worried about her having birthday cake....
Luna turned one on Saturday. We had a lovely brunch party for her. It was originally going to be held at the park next to the Civic Center, but the weather was a bit cool for a picnic at the park, so we held it here at the house. D and his brother were rock stars and helped me set up and clean. It was amazing...parties with kids are like complete chaos for two hours and then everyone is gone. One hour after everyone left, thanks to Ian and D, the house was in tip top shape, Ian was down for a nap, as was Luna, and D and I were watching Seinfeld in the living room.
Of course Luna had no idea what the fuss was all about. But she looked cute as a cupcake. Although I don't like to remember what I felt like a year ago, or how jarring the first month was, I have to say that having Luna was the best decision D and I ever made. I look forward to seeing her wake up every day. I love smelling her hair and holding her close. I love the look of joy she gets when I walk into the room. I love the way she giggles and laughs. I love the way she feels against me when I carry her on my back when we hike. I love the way she says hello by reaching out to touch someone's face. I love the way she looks when she soothes herself with lovie, drinks her bottle all by herself and splashes with utter delight in the bathtub. I love her eyes, especially when she smiles and right after the bath and her mile long eyelashes are all wet and dark. She is honestly the sunshine in my everyday. I am so incredibly in awe of the love she draws from me. One year has flown by and I already miss it. I hate to think of what I'll be like when she's 16. I just want her to be my bundle of baby forever.
